The years keep changing, but the gun's still in my heart. And there's a serpent on the sideline telling me that I'm a star Oh well. I read the message in the bathroom of the bar. It said, "well, if you like to party and you're bored give me a call" So then impulse whips across me like a coked up disco ball And that message in the bathroom becomes an encounter in the stall oh well I want to dance with the girl with the vowels in her name You know, the one who thinks that conversation is interesting. She can help me fix my life, and lend me dollars when my budget's tight. And we can fly to Paris on a plane! And she can keep me out of bars on a Tuesday afternoon We'll go skating in the park and talk about the headlines in the news. But no one's really interesting, it's all choreographed and real depressing And she's sitting here with me because we got drunk. Yeah, no one's really interesting, it's all choreographed and real depressing And she's sleeping here with me because we got drunk. Yeah, no one's really interesting, it's all choreographed and real depressing And she's moving in with me because we got drunk. Yeah, no one's really interesting, it's all choreographed and real depressing And she's living here with me because we got drunk. Because we got drunk.

I got wasted in my home, I went out of it alone. Then I ran into some guys, I used to hang out with sometimes. Then we all gathered up inside the bar. I was feeling pretty good when I went up for my first refill Then I locked eyes, with this beautiful girl. I told her about my issues and disregard for virtue. She said, "you know what, babe, you don't have to sleep alone" So! I threw down my drink and grabbed me keys. We started touching all sexually. We fell out the bar, and into my car, and into my home Where things got animated. Yeah we got animated. And then the morning came, the girl was gone And I was dressed in sheets. I looked around for her number, but she hadn't left anything. I asked around... but no one knew her. I asked around... Someone said, "she dates the bouncer up at Stubb's... the guy's enormous, he's always hanging around the pub. I'm pretty sure he's a headcase, and that he thinks he's in love" I asked around "She dates the bouncer up at Stubbs" "She dates the bouncer up at Stubbs!" "She dates the bouncer up at Stubbs" It was two in the morning, and I was looking over my shoulder and I fell down then I thought I saw that lover looking at me under the covers Then I passed out. So help me God.

W/O Regret 02:36
Kicking around waiting for you to want me. Living out my days sort of like I planned. And if I ever told a lie, well, it was then. And If I ever was alive, well, it was... Kicking around waiting for you to want me. Living out my days sort of like I planned. And if I ever told a lie, well, it was then. And If I ever was alive, well, it was then And if these days go by without regret, then you'll know I never said what I meant.

Half of ATX 01:53
She's having unprotected sex with half of Austin, Texas, but I still answer her phone calls in the night. And my record collection is an accurate reflection, of the unemployed rejection dressed in black. It's sort of like a TV show or a disaster at an Autozone, where no one's laughing at the jokes you made. It's pathetic and offensive, but I'm going on the offensive, and I'm taking back the pitchfork and the fire. She reminds me of a train ride through the Midwest in the summer. Or a bookshelf full of picture books, but a wallet full of money She's got tattoos of corporate logos in the middle of her back. She went crazy when I passed outside the party, well I simply could not find my way in. Well, she went crazy when I passed outside the party, man, I really could not find my way in. She went crazy when I passed outside the party, She's having unprotected sex with half of Austin, Texas, but I still answer her phone calls in the night. And my record collection is an accurate reflection, of the unemployed rejection dressed in black. It's sort of like a TV show or a disaster at an Autozone, where no one's laughing at the jokes you made. It's pathetic and offensive, but I'm going on the offensive, and I'm taking back the pitchfork and the fire. now she's fucking every asshole in town. (WOAH!)

Steadfast, no action, the cars on the road. Safe in a test tube with panels of foam. Girls in bikinis, sick pregnant and poor, selling me aspirin dipped in remorse. Fade from the weekend into the dirt Manifest nations for buckets of worms. Holding the ace card up against your shirt, her sterile treasure island's my semen resort All poor results, backflips and salt. Ten days in one. I only paid for four. She's depressing, manages to hold her own I kept her letter on a page inside a notepad. A verse from the good book rolled up in my hand, Stale clouds of smoke keep the kids in the band. A trip for the summer, a walk in the park, manual labor, no questions, he's dead Tanja's got textbooks, a coat, and a badge. Amber's an actress obsessed with her dad The bike's in the gutter and stuck in reverse, but that's not a reason to stay where you were. All poor results, backflips and salt. Ten days in one. I only paid for four. Work's depressing, stays around for good. I kept her letter on a page inside a notepad. Steadfast, no accent, the cars on the road. Safe in a test tube with panels of gold. Girls in bikinis, sick pregnant and sore, selling me aspirin dipped in remorse. Fade from the evening into the dirt Manifest nations for buckets of germs. Holding the ace card up against your chest her sterile treasure island's a safe place to rest.

Ah, ah, Kentucky. Why don't you come back to Virginia? I could make some t-shirts that say, "Hey! Part of Kentucky's Coming Back Home!" And we'll remember. That a significant part of Kentucky used to belong to Virginia. Used to belong to Virginia. To Virginia, my sweet baby girl.

Waiting on my drawbacks to soak up in your bed. You don't like opinions or drinking on the bend. I don't mean no harm, but I think it's time you know. That when that bus takes off for Dallas, you'll be riding it alone. ...yeah you'll be sucking off my enemies ....before you reach Waco I packed your bags, they're waiting by the door. Now here's an US Magazine for the road Baby don't cry, both you and I know. That you'll be sucking off my enemies before you reach Waco. See, I like wading through the tall grass and wrestling with the dogs. Postponing important decisions and drinking on the job I don't mean no harm, but you just get in the way. So here's your bus ticket to Dallas, now get out of my face I packed your bags, they're waiting by the door. Now here's an US Magazine for the road Baby don't cry, both you and I know. That you'll be sucking off my enemies before you reach Waco. ...yeah you'll be sucking off my enemies ....before you reach Waco I said, before you reach Waco, Oh hun, before you reach Waco

about

BANNED FROM BARFLYS by Wilson Getchell

I wrote these songs when I was living in Austin, Texas in my mid-twenties. I was at the peak mess period in my life. I was drinking too much and too often and making all kinds of terrible decisions, albeit while having a good time. BANNED FROM BARFLYS basically tells that story.

(Barflys is a dive bar in Austin. I got banned from there for reasons that were never made clear to me.)

Around the time I wrote these songs, an acquaintance of mine in Richmond, VA said he was starting a record label. He told me he wanted to make me a centerpiece of the label and he flew me back to Virginia to record. Long story short, he turned out to be a totally unreliable asshole.

Anyway, after several trips back and forth between Austin and Richmond and various studio sessions, we ended up scraping the entire project. Over time I wrote new songs, and started new bands and I basically forgot about these songs.

In spring 2023, I was on a camping trip with some friends in Uwharrie National Park. We were singing songs around the campfire, as people do, and I ended up playing a bunch of these songs. They were well received and I later decided to finally get them recorded. I got most of the recording done in June 2023 and then had to set the project aside for a few months. I was able to finish up overdubs in December 2023 and mixing was finally completed in February 2024.

I had a lot of fun working on these songs. It was a weird experience to get so intimately reacquainted with this person I used to be. I can’t say it was entirely healthy to be honest. Haha. But it was a good time.
